Our History

The History of Fox's dates back to 1945 when Mr A L Fox set-up a school of motoring. The 'Chiltern School of Motoring' prospered with a fleet of a dozen vehicles until 1956 when it was hit by the Suez crisis and subsequent shortage of Petrol and imposed Rationing.

Obviously looking for an alternative source of revenue, the Fox family decided to open a Men's Outfitters on the basis of Mrs I D Fox's earlier experiences in the Retail Outfitting and Drapery trade. The Driving School office was cleared and stock set out on a kitchen table with Coat's hung initially from a Gas Pipe!

Much of the merchandise, at the time, came from government surplus disposals and among the earlier purchases were a number of army tents. They sold readily and repeat demand started to mount up. The Camping Era was about to commence.

The business has come a long way from the early days and Fox's is now one of the most respected Independent Outdoor Retailers in the UK. From Camping, Walking, and World Travel to Skiing, Snowboarding and Mountaineering, Fox's prides itself on stocking the leading brands for Clothing, Footwear and Equipment.

The Outdoor Footwear department is undoubtedly one of the largest in the country, with currently over 400 different stock lines on offer, from Walking Boots, Climbing Shoes and Wellies to Sports Sandals, Aquashoes and Apres Ski Boots to name but a few.
